Malaysian Bar Association launches free disaster legal assistance for flood victims
KUALA LUMPUR (December 28): The Malaysian Bar Association has launched a program to provide free disaster legal assistance to flood victims in Kuala Lumpur, Pahang and Selangor.
The association said the program, which runs through its National Legal Aid Committee with assistance from the courts, will be available in multiple locations for an initial period of two weeks, from December 27 (Monday) to January 10.
The service is available Monday through Thursday, 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Malaysian bar said.
“The service will be free and open to all Malaysians and non-Malaysians; a means test (determination of eligibility for aid) is not required.
“We will help everyone affected and in need,” he added.
The service is offered at Kuala Lumpur Legal Aid Center, Kuantan Legal Aid Center, Temerloh Legal Aid Center, Bilik Peguam Mahkamah Kuantan, Selangor Legal Aid Center in Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor Legal Aid Center, Kajang Court Complex, Klang High Court, Tribunal and Magistrate Court Sessions, and Shah Alam Court Complex.
“The Malaysian Bar will continue to work to expand the reach of the program to cover as many localities as possible. The initial period of operation can also be extended, if necessary, ”said Chairman AG Kalidas.
He urged lawyers – including those who specialize or have relevant experience in insurance, personal injury and probate matters, as well as chamber students – to devote their time and expertise to the program.
“The Malaysian Bar stands in solidarity with all those affected by the floods, and we are committed to providing our support and assistance to help those in need rebuild their lives after this tragedy,” Kalidas added.
