Lawyers drop GBA for new association

7,411 lawyers under GBA since 1877

Law Society of Ghana promoters or sponsors unknown

Some lawyers in the country have reportedly registered a new company to compete with the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).

Assaseradio.com reports that the new company is called the “Law Society of Ghana” (Limited by Guarantee, LBG).

Prior to the establishment of the Law Society of Ghana, the Ghana Bar Association was the only professional association of lawyers in Ghana whose admission was automatic for lawyers who were called to the bar.

Although the rationale for the establishment of the Law Society of Ghana is unknown, the society was successfully registered.

Meanwhile, the GBA website, www.ghanabar.org, states that “today it is factually established that 7,411 have been admitted to the Ghana Bar since 1877, with approximately 3,000 in local practice” .

Under the existing GBA Membership Agreement, the GBA has 7,411 members. However, the GBA, according to the records of its published list of members who are in financial standing for the current legal year, has 3,770 members.
