IBP to provide legal assistance to voters; assist Comelec in voice buying complaints

The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) has agreed to assist the Election Commission (Comelec) and the poll watchdog Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE) in providing legal assistance to voters and receiving complaints for vote buying.

In a press release, the IBP indicates that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOA) with Comelec and LENTE on Thursday 5 May.

He said that under the memorandum of understanding, the IBP agreed “to extend free legal assistance to Comelec and its officers, Board of Electoral Inspectors, Board of Canvassers, teachers and voters. during the pre-election, election and post-election periods”. days through help desks set up by its chapters across the country. »

He said free legal assistance includes answering legal questions and assisting in drafting and notarizing complaints, affidavits and other election-related legal documents and pleadings; and coordinate with electoral council members and the Department of Education Supervisor (DESO) of polling centers to maintain the smooth conduct of the elections. »

He added that the IBP “will also work closely with Comelec’s Kontra Bigay task force in collecting complaints of vote buying during the election period.”

LENTE, through its volunteers and local law school chapters, will work closely with the IBP to “monitor the election as a whole.”

“As a result, LENTE will coordinate and consult with Comelec and the IBP in conducting a national voter education and election-related information dissemination campaign,” the IBP said.
