AUSTIN – Free legal resources are available for low-income people affected by flooding and other conditions created by Hurricane Nicholas.

The Texas State Bar’s Disaster Legal Services toll-free helpline (800 504-7030) connects callers with legal aid providers in their area who can help them:

  • Replacement of important legal documents lost or destroyed during the disaster;
  • Life, medical and property insurance claims;
  • Home repair contracts and contractors;
  • Consumer protection issues such as predatory pricing and avoiding contractors scams in the recovery process;
  • Consultation on landlord-tenant issues; and other questions.

The hotline assists callers in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. Those eligible for assistance will be matched with attorneys who can provide free and limited legal assistance.

Additional disaster recovery resources are available at texaslawhelp.org, trla.org/disaster, and texasbar.com/catastrophe.

The state bar reminds the public that in many cases it is a felony in Texas for an attorney or a person representing a lawyer to contact a person for the purpose of legal representation if the person has no first requested the call or personal visit.

Contact is not illegal if the lawyer does not request payment or has a pre-existing professional-client or family relationship with the person contacted.

If you witness anything that you believe is inappropriate solicitation or barricade, please obtain the name and phone number of the person making the contact and report it to your local law enforcement authority or to the State Bar’s Chief Disciplinary Council Office by emailing CDCinfo @ texasbar. com or toll free at 866-224-5999.
